Riding In Cars With Boys
January 2nd 2007 10:13
They say that there is more chance of dying in a car accident than there is of being killed in plane crash… so why is it most people will jump into a vehicle with just about anyone, whilst they grip their seat and turn white during the slightest hint of turbulence on a plane?
You may think you never do this but think about it, there’s friend’s or family’s cars, taxis and buses. You must’ve taken a lift with someone at some stage in your life.
The other day, I hopped in a car with my fiance’s best mate. Being your typical guy, he was hooning around, taking corners too fast, etc and I just did my best to steady myself but it got me to thinking about how many times I’ve been in similar situations. Quite often, I will grab a taxi when late for work and brave the road rage. I’ll scam a lift home at a party, taking the person’s word that they haven’t had a drink that night and in all honesty, I haven’t ever really thought much of the consequences.
Isn’t it funny how we have fear instilled in us for so many different reasons but sometimes the most risky situations we don’t even register the danger we could be exposing ourselves to?

I've been in cars with guys who have driven like maniacs (hell, I drive like a maniac sometimes) and never thought twice about it. And some of the driving has been bloody dangerous. Crazy when you think about it.

It is worrying and, as my daughter passes each and every birthday, I do consider the consequences of her future experiences "in cars with boys", and the showing off that can and does occur.
By the way, Cibby ... do I take this to mean that the fastest and most reckless male drivers are also the ones with the smallest penises?
I'll file that away for future reference ... maybe I can use that as an argument against, when my daughter finally gets old enough to experience boys and cars for herself ...
... "oh no, you don't want to ride with him. He goes too fast around corners, he must have a really small penis".
D'ya think it'll work?

It's a very good point. I think there's something to do with the more personal aspect of saying no to getting into a car with a potentially dangerous driver. People might laugh or jeer at you for being careful, whereas with planes, we don't actually speak to the pilot...do you know what I mean? I'm a bit delirious today and just realising that making my point coherant isn't easy.
