If You Wanna Be My Internet Lover

January 29th 2007 12:34
It’s not surprising that people have turned to the Internet for dating. Technology has weaseled its way into so many aspects of everyday living. We can do our banking, shopping, client liaisons, house-hunting, job applications, almost everything online. So why not take to the World Wide Web to find our soul mate?

I don’t have anything against the whole idea, which is not to say I’m not skeptical about the concept but I actually like the idea of stripping down the superficial and connecting on a personal level with someone you’ve never met before.

Generally speaking, most people let their guard down when chatting online. I have no idea why but I will speak to people I never even said ‘hello’ to at school about the most intimate parts of my life on MSN. So using myself as the rule, doesn’t that mean that Internet relationships are more honest? Therefore, wouldn’t they have a better chance than those based on mutual lust at a party?

I can’t speak from experience, the only person I met from interaction online wasn’t exactly to my tastes so I shied away from giving it another go but I’d like to know how it works for others.

Who’s met someone online?

What experiences have you had (the good the bad and the ugly)?

Who’s found true love online or has a valuable life’s lesson to share?

Let’s open the floor…

Engaged!!

There are so many great things about being newly engaged...

Firstly- I now have this impressive piece of “bling” on my finger!

Secondly- It’s a major perve deterrent! I don’t even have to open my mouth anymore. The old codger stealing a sideways glance, on those rare occasions when my fiancé (I’m milking that one too!) is not accompanying me will just get my hand in his face. Even if the sanctity of my impending marriage doesn’t bother him, he knows he’ll have a lifelong scar if I decided to punch him in the face!

Thirdly- There’s the comparisons. The “Oh, you’re engaged? Let me see your ring” and I can’t say I’ve had a single person who was unimpressed (except my oh-so-hilarious Uncle, who admitted he was using a standard piece when he said “It’s the thought that counts!)

The whole impending wedding stuff is scary, mainly from a financial perspective but I know it’ll all come together and the planning is part of the fun. I was so excited when we paid the deposit on the venue, no turning back now!

Dress shopping has begun, starting with a major veto on my intended tagging along. Apparently, he’s not even allowed to see it until the big moment… I’m skeptical as to whether I can manage that!

It’s also so nice walking into fancy bridal shops and being treated like royalty! No Pretty Woman moments for this young lady!

Then there’s the fact (now butt out if you hate the mushy stuff) that I am now that much closer to marrying the love of my life, my best friend and confidant. Being engaged has made what was already such an amazing connection, feel like the most intimate and precious secret in the world, that only the two of us can share.

Nothing will make me happier than the day I stand beside him and say “I do”!

Riding In Cars With Boys

January 2nd 2007 10:13
They say that there is more chance of dying in a car accident than there is of being killed in plane crash… so why is it most people will jump into a vehicle with just about anyone, whilst they grip their seat and turn white during the slightest hint of turbulence on a plane?

You may think you never do this but think about it, there’s friend’s or family’s cars, taxis and buses. You must’ve taken a lift with someone at some stage in your life.

The other day, I hopped in a car with my fiance’s best mate. Being your typical guy, he was hooning around, taking corners too fast, etc and I just did my best to steady myself but it got me to thinking about how many times I’ve been in similar situations. Quite often, I will grab a taxi when late for work and brave the road rage. I’ll scam a lift home at a party, taking the person’s word that they haven’t had a drink that night and in all honesty, I haven’t ever really thought much of the consequences.

Isn’t it funny how we have fear instilled in us for so many different reasons but sometimes the most risky situations we don’t even register the danger we could be exposing ourselves to?
